TypewriterTechs WHERE QUALITY RESTORATION IS OUR STANDARD

Stacks Image 1344
The Underwood family, a successful manufacturer of ribbons and carbon paper, started out originally supplying ribbons to Remington Typewriter.  Later when Remington decided to produce its own ribbons, Underwood bought the creation of Franz Wagner, a German-American inventor and started producing Underwood Typewriters. In the early 1900's Underwood emerged as the premier typewriter design, most recognized today and most imitated at the time. The Underwood 5 series became the standard for office machines for many years and secured Underwood's legacy. Wanting to expand on their success with the #5, Underwood re-engineered the basic design. This change included a shorter more compact throw arm on the striker assembly along with a multi hinged low spring design which reduced the snap back noise from the striker, making the process faster and more fluid moving. They then enclosed the whole assembly to quiet it down and the Underwood Noiseless Standard was born. The portable version of the Underwood Noiseless incorporated a faster type mechanism, new carriage return and a shift key design with the quieter more enclosed mechanism. The Champion was considered the elite of the Underwood portables with all the bells and whistles of a full size machine. Underwood portables became known for their durability and many solid features. However, after WW11 Underwood's market share began shrinking. The company was eventually bought by Olivetti and in the early 1960s totally merged into a newly formed Olivetti-Underwood Corporation which lasted into the 80's when the name "Underwood" eventually disappeared.

In the late 1950's The Underwood typewriter Company was struggling. Their massive debt left them open to a buyout by Olivetti. The Underwood 21 was one of the models co-produced by the two companies. It is one of the largest portable typewriters produced. Its size gives it a pleasant crisp feel. Its design incorporated some of the best features of both company typewriters. The Underwood 21 and its identical sister, the Olivetti studio 44 and both pleasant easy to type on machines

Nothing about this typewriter feels flimsy. When you strike a key, there’s a measured pace to the typebar. According to Olivetti, “the typebar movement is based on the principle of progressive acceleration.” The Underwood 21 feels like an extension of your fingers. The mechanicals move smoothly and accurately.
Typed characters come out bright, true and aligned. Olivetti claims the perfect alignment is because the carriage movement is comprised of a steel tube that glides over roller bearings

A worldwide favorite of students, writers and teachers. the Underwood 21 combines functionality with style. It has value and features with the feel of a full-size machine.

The company was originally founded in Italy, in 1908. They purchased the Underwood Typewriter Company in 1959. In October 1963, Olivetti totally merged Underwood into a newly formed Olivetti-Underwood Corporation. This resulted in the reversal of the double names on US machines.

Olivette says the Studio 44 has " the performance of a standard typewriter is required in the space of a portable. The Studio 44 bridges the gap when a standard machine would be uneconomical and a personal portable unsuitable.”

This particular typewriter's user was based in Pearl harbor during 1941-1946. The information the owners daughter furnished indicated she was a unit secretary at the Naval air station. It is the secretary model, not the signal corps model Given the date code on the typewriter, its an excellent probability the typewriter was a witness to the attack
